Swensen's Ice Cream & Sundaes in Eastwood Mall
Ice cream is such a happy food. Back when we were kids, our parents would always use ice cream as an incentive for getting a good grade in school. A tub of ice cream has always been a staple too during birthday parties and happy family occasions. This is probably why eating a simple cone or cup of ice cream brings back such happy memories for me.
Summer is really here as the temperature has been steadily rising the past few days in Manila and every afternoon is starting to be more and more an ordeal. It doesn't help being surrounded by trees too as the air alone is very warm. Well, we can't do much about the weather but we can definitely beat the heat by eating some...ICE CREAM!
One Sunday afternoon, I invited my family out to try Swensen's. This is a US-based ice cream parlor that has branches around Asia such as Thailand and Singapore. We're so happy that Swensen's finally made it to our shores! In fact, it has actually been here since 2010 if I'm not mistaken but their first branch was in SM Mall of Asia which was sooooo far away from home. I'm glad that they opened their 2nd outlet in Eastwood Mall which is now more accessible for us.
My entire family loves ice cream! Even my Dad who stays away from chips and deep-fried items always gives in to ice cream and chocolates! I love the diner feel of this ice cream parlor. Wish the waiters would also dress the part similar to how it was back in the 70s.
The menu had a lot of photos of the items available and I tell you, everything looked so good that it took us a couple of minutes of debating, order switching and negotiating until we got our orders finalized. I think our server let out a silent whoop as soon as we told him, "that was all, thank you."
We agreed to share two ice cream platters to be able to try the different flavors. Of course, what's a visit to an ice cream parlor without having the old time classic Banana Split (Php. 270)? Upon seeing this, Mom immediately took a quick down memory lane where she recounted frequenting a local ice cream parlor to share a Banana Split with my Kongkong when she was younger. The Banana Split came with three scoops of ice cream -- vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. I tried the wafer on top of the ice cream and was a bit disappointed as it was not crunchy anymore. The ice cream was delicious though. I found out that they make their own ice cream making it so cool! Among the three flavors, I love the strawberry ice cream the most.
Aside from the Banana Split, we also had the Chocolate Fondue (Php. 555) which had 9 scoops of ice cream. We all had a lot of fun with this as we were able to choose what flavors we want to try and while it was a bit messy, we all enjoyed dipping the ice cream into the melted chocolate dip and biting into it before it melts and drips all over.
The fondue platter also came with cut-up mangoes and bananas, chocolate brownies and more wafer. We love the chocolate brownie which was very moist and was made even yummier as we covered it with more chocolate.
I also tried the Strawberry Smoothie (Php. 165) which was very creamy. Wish they have added in fresh strawberries too.
