Barrio by Mex Out at 313 Somerset
I don't know about you but there's something truly comforting about eating Mexican food. I just love having a bowl of fully loaded nachos, burritos and tacos and most especially adding guacamole anywhere possible. Do you agree with me?
Mexican has been our go-to whenever we want something more laid back. Back in Manila, we'd even pair our Mexican feast with a glass of beer with lime but since alcohol is quite pricey here in the Lion City..then a glass of soda would do. Haha! Kidding aside, we're just so lucky to have discovered quite a number of good Mexican spots that never fails to satisfy our cravings whenever it happens.
Recently, we got to try Barrio by Mex Out at 313 Somerset. It has actually been there since middle of 2016 but since we rarely get to frequent Orchard Road during the weekend, it was when we agreed to meet up with cousin J for an impromptu dinner out that we decided to check the restaurant out.
We started our meal with Loaded Nachos (S$13.60) which was the BOMB! I love how generous the serving of guacamole was. That's one big fat scoop of creamy mashed avocado on top of a bed of crunchy tortilla chips, smokey chili con carne, cheese and sour cream. So yummy! You can really tell that the tortilla chips were freshly cooked as opposed to those that came out of a box.
What's a Mexican meal without tacos right? We tried the Fish Taco (S$15.90/3pcs) where you can choose to have 2-3 pieces, with or without drinks. If I'm not mistaken, everything in the menu is priced below $20. Beer battered Sea Bass with pickled red cabbage, chipotle aioli and salsa. I appreciated the fact that they made use of Sea Bass and not the usual Dory. The fish has a nice crunch on the outside and literally melts in your mouth. If you're not a big meat loving person then I recommend that you try this instead.
However, if you just can't skip meat just like my two companions, then try the Pulled Pork Taco (S$15.90/3pcs). Slightly spicy pulled pork flakes topped with chipotle aioli, pickled red cabbage and pico de gallo. I wasn't able to try this but judging on how the boys inhaled these soft tacos, I guess it's safe to say that it was pretty good.
We also tried the Carne Asada (Beef) Burrito Rice Bowl (S$14.80). I really love how generous they are with the serving sizes of their dishes and this one was no exemption. Dig into the fragrant Mexican rice that's topped with thinly-sliced and tender carne asada, roasted mushrooms, salsa picante, sour cream and red onion.
We had a fun dining experience at Barrio by Mex Out. My only gripe was that the place was jam packed so the three of us had to squeeze into a tiny table and our neighboring party was so close that I can literally reach out and grab a piece of their nachos with no effort at all. I'm glad though that they opened a second outlet at VivoCity which seems to be more spacious.
Check out Barrio by Mex Out at 313 Somerset, 01-14/15 313 Orchard Road, Singapore 238895. They also have an outlet at VivoCity and Mex Out has two outlets namely at MBFC and at Far East Square in Chinatown.
